The Generosity of Strangers: How a Person I Had Just Met Helped Me Obtain the Position That Transformed My Existence

During the late 1980s, I was beginning a low-cost journey to Europe with a travel partner. Since my companion was considering enrolling in graduate studies in New York, we had booked a fortnight visit there en route to London.

We got to the postgrad residence, a sizeable 10-storey building on the Manhattan's Upper West Side named International House. Once we unpacked, we went directly to the cafeteria, where we got some food, sat down, and began chatting with fellow residents.

Adjacent to my seat was an individual of Iraqi origin enrolled in an engineering program at an Ivy League institution. He inquired what I my profession was, and I told him that I had newly finished with a scientific background and had been working on studies with electron microscopy.

He pointed out that there was an electron microscope unit at Columbia University – adjacent to the engineering faculty, which was how he knew about it. He proposed that I consider applying for a position with them. I dismissed the idea, saying that I was heading off to Europe and, more critically, I did not possess a US visa.

The next day I toured the city, going back to the cafeteria that night. The Iraqi student walked over to me and informed me that he had arranged an interview for me with the director of the microscopy lab at Columbia. Since he had gone to the trouble, I went to the meeting – but immediately told my prospective employer that I lacked the necessary visa, so I was unable to accept the role.

Reflecting the city's spirit – a city where opportunities abound – she declared: “We'll handle it. When can you start?” I didn't board the aircraft to London.

I worked there for a trio of years. A perk of the job was that I also received complimentary education at Columbia, and I used the opportunity to complete a master’s of international affairs.

We didn't cross paths after that and I don’t even know his name, but his incredible act of kindness transformed my future in multiple respects. I didn't possess the confidence or nerve to approach someone at an prestigious college and request employment. Moreover, I had long dreamed to pursue education overseas, but wouldn't have been able to pay for it without that educational benefit.

Perhaps most importantly, that role at the university resulted in a job in Zurich where I got to know my handsome spouse from France, with whom I now have four amazing children. It was a total sliding doors moment. That kind stranger set me on a different course in life, and I’m forever grateful.
